This year's shortlist for Best Strategy/Simulation Game features a small but superb list of titles. Fire Emblem: Three Houses marked the series' return to home consoles after a 12 year hiatus, combining Fire Emblem's staple turn-based gameplay with teaching and army customization elements. Planet Zoo, a spiritual successor to Zoo Tycoon, took the former's design of constructing and managing habitats for wildlife and expanded it substantially. Total War: Three Kingdoms provided users with the ability to choose from a myriad of warlords and form alliances strategically while attempting to conquer China. Last, but certainly not least, Untitled Goose Game took the gaming world by storm as both a puzzle solver and an outlet for causing trouble.

    The Shortlist:

    Fire Emblem: Three Houses

    Planet Zoo

    Total War: Three Kingdoms

    Untitled Goose Game

    The Winner:

    Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Many of the early reactions to Three Houses were mixed and fraught with worry about the final product's quality. Intelligent Systems ultimately quieted those concerns with one of the finest strategy games in years; a title that provides compelling map design, a wide variety of customization options that open up a significant amount of replay value, a solid story and cast of characters, and numerous paths to incentivize replays even more. Regardless of which house was picked - Golden Deer, Blue Lions, or Black Eagles - chances are nearly everyone who played the game could agree it was a fine effort by both Intelligent Systems and Nintendo.

On the fighting game front, 2019 was a year for industry stalwarts. The last 12 months saw the eleventh mainline installment of the Mortal Kombat franchise, a bloody and tactical fighter with a spectacular story mode; a tense reboot of Samurai Shodown, a series that began its life in the arcade in 1993; and Dead or Alive 6, a refined and accessible entry in Team Ninja's long-running 3D fighting game. The odd man out in our shortlist: Shovel Knight Showdown, a brawling spin-off featuring heroes and villains from the indie darling Shovel Knight

    The Shortlist:

    Dead or Alive 6

    Mortal Kombat 11

    Samurai Shodown

    Shovel Knight Showdown

    The Winner:

    Mortal Kombat 11

NetherRealm's revivification of Mortal Kombat continues with Mortal Kombat 11, a polished fighter that delivers across several modes. Featuring modified mechanics and shortened combos, it provides a slower, more tactical experience that rewards strategic play and punishes misses. It also boasts an incredibly deep and accessible tutorial, 21 interactive stages, smooth graphics, and a huge amount of online and offline content. Its best feature might be a lengthy, cinematic story mode with production values almost worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare remained in first place on the UK charts, according to GfK/UKIE for the week ending December 28. This is the final week of 2019.

Overall physical sales of 2019 were down nearly 20 percent when compared to 2018. This will change in 2020 as GfK will no longer be providing UK charts. A new project from the European trade body ISFE called GSD will be used starting in 2020. This will include all retail sales, as well as digital sales from some publishers. Some publishers not providing digital sales includes Bethesda and Nintendo.

The data from GSD will take longer to compile and be posted. UKIE will be using the GSD chart as the official UK  charts going forward and will release physical and digital charts separately.

Puzzle games are an interesting breed to assess.  In some ways, it shares connective tissue with the subjectivity inherent in judging a comedy: what exactly makes this work challenging?  Could difficulty be explained by poor sign-posting or nefarious ‘moon logic’ that’s impossible to intuit without following a game guide?  Perhaps it’s a well-constructed conundrum that feels worth expending the mental energy to reach that sense of victory.  When it’s the latter, I’d argue these moments rival—perhaps even outmatch—the adrenal sensation found in the most polished shooters.  Ranging from a passion project toiled over for more than a half-decade to established IPs refashioned with new ideas, these four nominees embody the best qualities of the puzzle genre in a distinctive way from one another.

    The Shortlist:

    Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince

    Manifold Garden

    Tetris 99

    Catherine: Full Body

    The Winner:

    Tetris 99

35 years on and the Tetris franchise is still finding ways to surprise the gaming world.  Let me repeat that for those in the back: 35 YEARS!  Whether it’s exploring new avenues in VR the previous year, in Tetris Effect, or incorporating Battle Royale in Tetris 99, to think Alexey Pajitnov’s design is so malleable to incorporate these ideas to instant acclaim is a testament to his iconic template.  It also challenges our expectations for the ‘Battle Royale’ mode/sub-genre as a whole too.  You’re not obligated to make a shooter around this popular mold; it’s an idea that can be transplanted to incredibly old franchises and be among any year’s best and brightest.

From the likes of Pitfall! to Super Mario, and the eventual introduction of Sonic and Rayman, platformers were synonymous with videogames for me from my earliest days of gaming. While I eventually broadened my horizons beyond platformers (and Madden), they remain an integral element in my personal gaming experience, along with gaming as a whole. A number of this year's shortlisted titles pay homage to the genre's humble beginnings, not least in Super Mario Maker 2, but also show how the genre as a whole has continued to evolve and expand over time with franchises like Trials.

    The Shortlist:

    Yoshi’s Crafted World

    Shovel Knight: King of Cards

    Super Mario Maker 2

    Trials Rising

    The Winner:

    Super Mario Maker 2

I think most would agree that Mario is the long reigning king of platformers. Take key components from some of his best 2D outings to create a palette from which you can build a near infinite amount of custom stages. Add in an entertaining and helpful tutorial/story mode, the ability to download the creations of others, as well as regular updates and add-ons from Nintendo, and you get an incredibly comprehensive platforming experience, and our Best Platformer of 2019.
