The next generation PlayStation - the PS5 - likely won't release until 2020, according to sources who spoke with Kotaku.

Two sources who are familiar with Sony's plans for the PS5 said that it is unlikely to release in 2019, let alone 2018. However, the plans are always shifting.

"On a multi-year project, a lot can happen to shift schedules both forward and backward, said one source. "At some point, Sony’s probably looked at every possible date. It’s all about what they think is the best sweet spot in terms of hardware."

The PS4 launched seven years after the PS3. If the PS5 follows the same timeframe that would put a release in 2020.

A PS5 development kit might be in the wild, however, it could be a "super early" development kit that are "often PCs with the CPU and GPU." Before a console launches, developers will likely get multiple versions of development kits.
