July 31st, 2012NewsTake-Two announced during its first quarter conference call that Borderlands 2 is doing incredibly well in terms of pre-orders at retail.
"Consumer anticipation is phenomenal," said Karl Slatoff, chief operating officer of Take-Two about Gearbox's shooter. "Pre-orders are currently the third highest of any title in Take-Two's history, behind only Grand Theft Auto 4 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas."
For context, Grand Theft Auto 4 made $500 million in its first week, selling 6 million copies, with 3.6 million on its first day.

July 31st, 2012NewsTake-Two's net revenue for the first quarter of fiscal year 2013 clocked in at $226.1 million, down from the previous year's $334.4 million. Take-Two hit a gross profit of $39.4 million for the first quarter of 2013, compared to $123.2 million in the same period last year. The company's GAAP loss was $110.8 million, up from the previous financial period, which saw an $8.6 million loss.
Major contributors to Take-Two's finances during the first quarter were Max Payne 3, NBA 2K12, Spec Ops: The Line and catalog sales in the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises. Catalog sales accounted for 26 percent of Take-Two's net revenue, up 50 percent year-over-year. Digital revenue grew 33 percent and accounted for 14 percent of this period's net revenue.
Take-Two has adjusted its fiscal year 2013 outlook slightly, expecting $1.7 - $1.8 billion by March 2013, rather than the $1.75 - $1.85 it reported in May. Take-Two still has to launch Borderlands 2, NBA 2K13 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown this fiscal year. This leaves a probable gap of $600 - $700 million in sales, considering the year runaway hit Red Dead Redemption launched Take-Two reported just $1.45 billion in revenue.
On a related note, Grand Theft Auto 5 is still categorized as "TBA" for both its platforms and launch date.

July 31st, 2012NewsMax Payne 3 has shipped 3 million units since its launch for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in May, Take-Two Interactive announced in its first quarter 2013 financial report today. Max Payne 3 and Spec Ops: The Line both sold fewer copies than Take-Two anticipated, leading to first quarter results below the company's expectations, CEO Strauss Zelnick said.
Still, "the outlook for our slate of upcoming releases is stronger than ever," Zelnick added. "Early consumer enthusiasm suggests robust demand for our extraordinary lineup of upcoming releases, particularly Borderlands 2, NBA 2K13 and BioShock Infinite. We continue to expect fiscal 2013 to be one of the best years in Take-Two's history."

New Super Mario Bros. 2
Release date: 19th August
Recently, Nintendo announced they were making a 2D Mario that was a direct sequel to the best-selling 2006 New Super Mario Bros. game for the DS. Yes, that’s right. 2006. It has been six years since we’ve had a new 2D Mario platformer on the handheld. While this is technically the third in the New SMB line, it is in every way much more of a sequel to the DS game than the 4 player Wii version.

Release date: 28th AugustThe sequel to ArenaNet's 2005 hit MMORPG, Guild Wars, finally lands this August. Taking place in the high fantasy world of Tyria, 250 years after the players' defeat of the Great Destroyer, Guild Wars 2 looks well placed to shake up the world of MMORPGs where those before it have fallen by the wayside.
Persona 4 Arena
Release date: 7th August
The first thing you should know about Persona 4 Arena is that the developer pedigree is one of the best you can ask for. Arc Systems Works - the creators of the Guilty Gear and Blazblue - man the helms for this title brilliantly. It's really impressive how they can make something that feels like an accomplished and tournament-worthy fighter, yet has such simple controls that the bar for entry is Dead Sea low.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Release date: 21st August
Not really a sequel to the ever popular Counter-Strike: Source, it is more of a refinement, update and improvement rather than a brutal re-imagining. Why fix what isn't broken? It's still one life and you're out, unforgiving for new users and utterly, utterly addictive.

Sound Shapes
Release date: 7th August
Sound Shapes is our wild-card pick for August. Of all the titles on this list it's undoubtedly the most understated and least publicised. At its core, Sound Shapes is a uniquely stylish platformer whose soundtrack is affected by the way you play. Featuring a comprehensive level editor, and wonderful and varied level design, Sound Shapes has been shaping up nicely over the course of its extended development and is well worth a look for PlayStation Vita owners looking for their next handheld fix.

July 31st, 2012NewsClearly, Hong Kong gamers are getting the bost bang for their buck when it comes to the limited edition of Sleeping Dogs. Square Enix is tossing in four different content packs and enveloping Sleeping Dogs in some custom packaging, according to Siliconera.
The George St-Pierre pack is modeled after the MMA fighter of the same name, and includes the fighter's signature outfit and "flying punch" move for use in-game, and increased throw and grapple damage. The Police Protection pack unlocks an exclusive mission, SWAT car, SWAT outfit and rifle. The Martial Arts pack unlocks a shaolin warrior outfit and training dummy granting combat buffs. Finally, the Deep Undercover pack gives players a special undercover car and "plain clothes" costume, making it harder for criminals to detect undercover officer and protagonist Wei Shen.
Our more astute readers will recognize all of these packs as pre-order bonuses for various retailers here in the US, announced back in April. Sleeping Dogs - Hong Kong Edition will launch in Hong Kong on August 17 for 388 HKD, which comes out to about 50 US dollars.
